View Full Version : Few running issues

Hi all,

Having a few issues with the idle on my engine. I was advised to mix a fuel/oil ratio of 40:1 which I since found out was too lean.

The engine started fine and ran but as soon as it warmed up the idle went really high and the performance wasn't good. I stopped the engine and changed the ratio to 25:1 and ran again for a few minutes. Performace improved again slightly but not how it was and the idle is still high.

Did the 40:1 do something that the 25:1 can't fix?

I did notice the screws holding my pipe on came loose too but didn't think a not fully sealed exhaust would cause the idle to change that much.

Any advice on this greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Will

Check your linkages, they may be sticking. I found that I had to ream the little plastic pieces that the throttle linkage slides in. Check your throttle trim on your radio. Check your carb settings, High 1 1/2 turns out, Low 1 1/4 . Check your throttle idle adjustment screw as well. Check that your tank vent is not blocked, this will cause it to run lean but that usually is indicated by it bogging. After that check for leaking gaskets, while running spray wd-40 anywhere there is a mating surface, if it revs up while your doing this you have a leak. If it still starts easily I doubt that you have done any damage to the engine by running 40:1, I've heard of a few that use that ratio , I wouldn't suggest it though. :)

I ran 40-1 at one point and didn't see an benefit or power boost so I went back to 25-1. with more oil tuning is at picky since it has lubrication.

also make sure your fuel lines are on the right way to the carb. I have made the mistake putting lines on wrong enough times to mention this (just did it to one the other day). the line with the filter or clunk goes to the bottom of the carb. the return line which just sticks in the tank hooks to the primer bulb. if they are on backwards, the return line can't draw fuel once the level gets below the line and gives a lean/running out of gas symptom

The culprit was the pipe after all. The thing had become totally unattached to the engine. Once reattached I ran it again and the revs went back to normal until it came loose again! Bloody thing!

I've ordered a new copper gasket for it so once that arrives I'll threadlock the 2 screws in place.

Thanks for the replies.

Glad you got it sorted. I know it's a pain in the ass when the exhaust bolts come loose. :beat dead horse:

Dude, no fear with the pipe bolts, I've got the same issues. It gets a tad messy back there, as the seal isn't complete.

I've came across somewhere that one-piece pipes are very prone for bolts working themselves loose. Too much vibration I guess.

Glad the engine is sorted and wasn't something else more expensive. =)

I haven't had problems with my headbolts coming loose. you tighten them and after the engine warms up, give them a little more tightening. to keep from losing a bolt you can drill a hole through the head of the bolts and put tie wire through the bolts. they will only unscrew so far before the tension on the wire stops them
