Hi I have a TB2 and saw that there is a gearing option. Just wondering what that will do for me?

It will give you a bit more top end speed, they are a 2 tooth count difference. If installed on the MT they will give more bottom end torque.

Dang I need a gearset thats a little lower than stock TB2 gearing. I have plenty of topened, just need a touch quicker acceleration.

so you want a smaller gear on the first then. the clutch gear.

That's the only option I'm aware of, be nice to see 40/40, 41/39, 42/38. Guess your only choice is a high rpm clutch spring or an adjustable clutch like the Lauterbacher 4 shoe.

I'm getting one of these :-

Re-graded profile gears rock :punk:
Not directly gonna cure your problem, but it's the oppersite of the gear you need. Might work if you swap the gears over though and put this on the clutchbell.
It's the only solution I could find to, very slightly, gear up the car to be able to use the smaller FG type wheels and tyres. The option Nutech gearset just geared up the car too much. Hopefully this will just give me a little more legs down the straight :)
Fecking expensive though :rifle::damn: But no other solution about at the mo :(

Now I coming late to the FTX party but, I've always run FG gears from this guy

And I know others run MCD gears from him too.
No if someone in the 'trade' where to approach him, with a request and perhaps sample gears / fittings, perhaps he could engineer other options ?
Just a thought.

I just got a reply from this guy, sounds like you've already talked to him in person Nige? :excited:
He also mentioned given the measurements these gear sets should add up to a 79 tooth count not 80. So I've put in a request for 38/41 and 39/40 for my MT, stock 37/43 has loads of bottom end with my engine pipe combo so this should give me a tad more top end and settle the bottom end down from boiling the tires on take off.:punk:

stock gears add up to 80 but his add up to 79? I can see a 39/41 combo coming and needing an extra 40 ;)

He explained the math about figuring gear sets...wrong dia blanks, tooth mod...blah blah.
Sounds like he knows his stuff. Either way I'm getting two sets to try.

The guy had mine specially made in two days, said he could do any combo you want, pretty great service! noyb98098, if you want more speed you need to increase your tooth count on the clutch bell gear and reduce on the lay shaft but you'll lose a bit of bottom end torque. I tried the Nutech option set on my buggy and it certainly increased the top end speed but I lost too much bottom end so I went back to stock.

I take it he's still doing them with shaped bores so we don't have to use grub screws ?
I might order a stock ratio set just to get away form the grubs :yahoo:
If we mention the Thunderbot II when ordering will he know what we are after ?
Cheers

That's odd, all my stock replacement gears 057608 are vented and broached (no grub's) 37/43

That doesn't suprise me, I think my car started life as a test project for all the worst parts available

ya the no grub screw way is the best. makes me want to order a set of replacement gears just for that... I have a proto myself so understand that last statement all too well toys LOL

OK, we have different part numbers in the UK, so I'll ask Nige at freeprawn racing, which ones I need to rid me of grub screws.
Thanks all, something learned this evening :excited:

Right,
Come to fit the 'grubless' gears tonight, now the gears on my car have never really ligned up that great, so thought I'd play about when fitting these.
Now, my questions are, does it matter where the spacers / washers are fitted in oder to get the alignment right ? On my FG's I just stick washers where needed to get them right, so I've done the same here.

Also, the mesh doesn't seem as tight now, now someone has said this is down to going for the alloy motor and clutch mounts, but these grubless gears seem to have made it even more obvious again. Does it still look OK ?

I've got the same amount of mesh..but it runs fine..even after 20litres.
The shim/washer order doesn't matter as long as both sets of gears line up.

Yup, I agree with Mud :)
The mesh is pony, but, it seems to work and hasn't caused me any major problems.
The new gears that are getting made has a much much better mesh by the way, I can't wait till they are ready :punk:
