Hi, I am new guy in the nutechracing forums. I have been added this same message but only shorter to "introduce yourselves" - topic.

My name is Tapio and I am 17 years old student from the Finland.

I have been read alot of nutech racing products and I heard first informations about the nutech racing from my good friend Jesi.

I am very amazed about the quality and the fantastic layout of the nutech racing products and I am interested especially about the 1:5 scale vehicles wich has very nice and clean desing, 3 differentials and 4wd drive. Way more exiting than other manufacters products.

Well my good friend Jesi got me interested about these good products and he is the first and the only person in our country who sales nutech products and acessories, so I done my decision and bought a nutech thunderbolt 2 from him.

I will make unseeing brushless modification to it with my other good friend Janne who has cnc-machines and other big machines in his school and you all will see it laterit with alot of pictures and text .

I have been done 2 succesful brushless conversation projects before and the were both in 1:8 scale so I have some experience with this kind of electric acessories and parts etc...

Well, my project is making this Thunderbolt 2 to brushless conversation with mechanical brakes and almost waterproof electrics ;) .

Now I have been thinking and planning about the Nutech Thunderbolt 2 brushless project and my decision about the specs of it are:

- Scorpion systems HK-4035 10-12S 4200W 560kv brushless outrunner with 6mm axle, the motor have weight alot ( almost 500 grams ) and it can take approx. 100a constant max.

I already bought it because the price was good and there is 2 years warranty.

Because the motor is huge and the power and torque is more amazing I need to make some extra hard parts from aluminum T6-7056 with cnc-machine to mount the motor safely to the chassis. The motor will be mounted with 2 tick metal plates which has 3 bolts and one pitch chasm to set up right clearance and pinion to each gears when changing the gearings to other circumstances.

The pinion will be modified to fit the motor with this style collet but only bigger one: http://www.megamotorusa.com/Images/G...f?id=644&bc=no . I will protect the motor from dirt with metal cage or filter material wich is protected with metal meshwork, then I assemble a 12V flex to the backside of the cage with another meshwork to reduce the possibility to damage the outrunner motor. The motor have 2 year warranty in my country so I don't modify it.

- Turnigy K-Force 120A-HV OPTO 5-12S Brushless ESC.

The price and quality of the controller seems to be quite good, the parameters are good enough and the overall size is very small so I will use it. I will also buy a programming box to modify the parameters easier. I will get a water proof metal box from my friend where I will put the controller and maybe the hv-ubec with top quality silicone liquid, the controller will be water proof and the heat problems are solved because silicone is good heat conduit. There is also a possibility to install an external heatsink inside the metal box.Because the controller doesn't have bec and its opto controller I need to use hv-ubec.

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s..._Brushless_ESC .

- Flightmax 5S 5000mah 30c lipo batteries x 2 to 10s batteries. The batteries are heavy weight stuff but its not problem at all because the motor weight is lower than the original one.

I already have futaba 2,4pm 2,4ghz radios with good futaba servo's, futaba s-9351 to brake and large scale s-3306 to steering. The receiver will be added to traxxas summit waterproof receiver box.

Well I am also maybe the first person in the world who does have Thunderbolt 2 done in brushless conversation some day..

The price of the project is quite low when you think about what finedesingrc's or other brands conversations will cost and I hope that this project will work out some day, now I need to wait to get the 1:5 thunderbolt 2 from my friend with middle differential and mechanical brakes and other parts and stuff. The project is more challenging and funnier than 1:8 conversations because there is no available conversations on the market and there is things to do yourself. I like to build and make new cars, its fantastic when you get something to done yourself.

Enjoy ;)

I will update soon when I get more parts and the chassis with other parts and stuff.

I admire what you are going but I am from the old school. Electric RC is like watching star wars with the sound turned off. LOL Yes it is the wave of the future.

Thanks. Yeah I like electic cars because they are way more easier to repair and care, they can be very fast and torque is huge with large brushless motors also :excited: .

If I am right there is no other electric thunderbolt 2 conversations yet:p .

Now I need to get my thunderbolt 2 to home because I need some measures to motor mounts.

I know that electric is instant torque and very fast but it is so quite. Check this out.

fraid it's not my cup of tea either...great vid Jeff but what gets me is the quote...gas throws all nasty stuff into the air that causes cancer etc...so what exactly in the states fuels 90% of power stations where he gets his juice from...oh dear nasty stinky COAL...oopsie

tapsa i will be following this thread with interest...it'll be the first tb2 to do roof flips like the savage flux... but for all us petrol heads please put a recording of a gas engine in it with a big speaker so we can at least hear some noiseLOL

Not yet, but I already let the instructions to my friend so he can make the motor mount and other special parts after Christmas.

I have been make one prototype of motor adaptor for the outrunner motor and it looks quite good, but I know it if its good really when I get the motor mount and pinion gear.

I will give more information when I get more parts ;)

@Tapsa92

the Scorpion HK-4035-500KV have an 6mm diameter axle

you didnīt mean it is littlebit thin?!?

i think the Hacker A60-14L with 8mm axle is better option

I have mixed feelings. I converted all my nitros a couple years back and loved it. Had to drag a few people into the mix kicking and screaming but they submitted and joined in eventually hehe

Great project

Tapsa92
12-24-2009, 04:42 PM
Well I don't need an 8mm diameter axle because 6 is enough when I am using adapter wich makes the axle bigger to 10mm and then the spur gear will fit the motor perfectly, and I can cut the axle adapter if needed.

There is no problem with that. And yes I don't have a fortune to buy the best motor and other parts like esc etc.

But yes I hope that you enjoy to see the results later.

Kontronik power jive or jazz series hv 120 would be best esc's to this project but they cost too much to me. They are both waterproof controllers with plenty of parameters and the quality is excellent.

The parts what I am using right now are good enough to make good and working setup to me and they don't cost too much. I have futaba 3pm 2,4ghz controller, futaba s-9351 brake servo and futaba s 3306 steering servo. The servos can be modified to waterproof with plastic covering spray, o-ring and vaseline. Cheap and working trick:D .

aqwut is a guy I know in Ontario. He's been doing many brushless conversion for years. He showed me this cheap esc from hobbycity he did a rampage mt conversion with. very cheap and works great. it's a plane esc so you need a pistix but still the esc sells for $100.. and he used a $50 motor. I have the links in an email somewhere

I will add some videos as soonest as I get ESC, ubec and batteries. I have been make some prototypes of the motor mount but the final one is not ready yet. I will take some pictures when I have added the motor mount to the chassis and I will take some pictures with motor mounted to car too. My friend Jere has been helped a little bit with the acessories and I got the car from him.

I will give more information when I get new stuff and electric parts etc :) .

Im looking forward to seeing this,i to like the brushless motors, the only thing is there are so many conversions for these 1:5 cars im just would not be to sure which way to go.
:good idea:so when you are done would you be kind to do a step for step build,it would be real sweet for all the boys and girls to have a go them selves including me LOL

Tapsa92
02-02-2010, 01:05 PM
Well there is not many 1:5 conversation kits on today in the markets, thats why im making one for myself. I have been make 3-4 conversations with brushless electrics and LiPo batteries. My last project was conversating Jammin X2CRT Pro nitro truggy to brushess with mechanical brakes and with electric motor which had a 3-shoe clutch too. It was very nice and clean project, worked as well very good and the car was easy to drive. I like these projects because I like electric cars alot more because there is better enerhu efficiency and these big brushless motors have more power and torque than any nitro motors itself.

I will add some pictures and information when I get new parts as soonest as possible. I hope you peoples like this project.

02-03-2010, 08:56 PM
totally. I was running my little brushless sc truck last night with a couple nitros. they thought electrics were slow.... until I did a wheely past them at 30mph lol. I love the looks on their faces haha. it's priceless. and a $17 battery to boot with a $30 motor

Now some pictures. I mounted motor with prototype motor mount to chassis, the quality is not so good as it could be, but I will change it to better when my friend can make one.

http://i9.aijaa.com/t/00380/5754134.t.jpg (http://www.aijaa.com/v.php?i=5754134.jpg) .

There is aluminum collet between motor and pinion gear and the pinion gear is caught with 2 screws.

Next I will buy some electric parts and then I ask my friend to make another motor mount to replace the prototype.

Thanks for the picks that's Tapsa92 much better.
I still cant find out why the other picks dont work properly any way lets move on .
Looking good ,will you be drilling and taping the out put shaft from the motor so you can use a bolt to stop the gear wheel coming of ?also how do these motors react to water are you going to be making a cover for that as well

Tapsa92
02-22-2010, 09:34 PM
I don't know yet, but I think that the using of a bolt in the end of the shaft to stop the gear wheel coming out is not necessary because I use locktite and those 2 original bolts in the gear wheel to keep the gear in its place.

I dont want also damage the motor and the shaft because the motor is quite expensive to break.

Well next I will try to make battery trays for lipo batteries, I have some L-profile aluminum.

sickboy
02-22-2010, 09:48 PM
OK i can understand where you are coming from not wanting to damage your motor shaft, but whats your experience then with your other brushless motor conversion`s with the gear wheels .
Have you never had a gear wheel come lose ?

Tapsa92
04-29-2010, 11:18 AM
Hello.

The project is dead right now because I didn't get as much money as I expected to build this project ready, because of the financial reasons and high value electric parts like ESC...

Well I hope so that I can try to make another and better brushless conversion with thunderbolt 2 if I get more money some day maybe :P . Btw the motor was way too much powerfull and this project would work better with inrunner motor like lehner or neu.

If somebody is trying to modify big car like 1:5 thunderbolt 2 or another car to electric use I suggest to use powerfull inrunner motor and quality parts and acessories because it is worth it.

Thanks for all readers and have a nice time with your hobby :) .
