Hi All,

following on from Cabbie's thread about the C Hub screw coming loose http://www.nutechracingforum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=562.

I've replaced the bushing with bearings, I did this as I couldn't get a nice free action if I tightened the standard screws fully. I'll also be doing Cabbies mod of adding a screw to stop it dissapering if it should come loose.

However I don't think that will happen with this mod as there are next to no rotational forces acting on the screw to loosen it.

Anyhow, the parts. (left to right 5x7x0.3mm shim, 5x8x2.5mm teflon seled bearing, 2 x 5x7x0.2mm shims, 5x8x2.5 flanged bearing, 5x7x0.3mm shim, M5 x 15mm dome head screw)

Fitted to screw ready to fit.

The steering action is now very smooth and light with no lateral free play at all.

Good mod there mate, well done sourcing the bearings too, I'll give this a go if the hubs come loose again.

If I ever find a spare screw and bush to replace the one that fell out that is :going insane:

Cheers Matey, pm me your address and you can have my 3 remaining screws, and make yourself a bushing from 8mm steel tubing from b&q

I've been reading the spares in the uk thread, loved your last post !

hello I proved bearings there is and at the end they finished breaking, that that better result me this giving is these balljoint:

simply drill the holes of the c hub for 13mm, and place the screws of inside toward it was, it is very robust.regards

Yes, seen this, however your using alloy hubs, no forgiveness for normal bearings, plus you won't get an interference fit with your balljoints in the plastic hubs. I wouldn't have used the same bearings in alloy hubs.

I'll see how they go thanks.

I didn't want to drill the hubs, I've various balljoints/bearings I could have tried, but I wanted a direct cheap replacement for the standard bushings that solved the binding issues.

me this mod, the first time, I made it on the c-hub of plastic, putting the screws of inside toward it was, you avoid them to loosen the screws.regards

the bearing mod works awesome in the alloy c-hubs as well, I've not run it yet but on the bench zero play and friction free...thanks for sharing the mod and for the rcbearing link;)

Update,

As churre99 said some of the bearings have collapsed/cracked (on the right in the pic), however they only came apart on removal and the threads in the knuckles are still tight.

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG1067-1.jpg

So whilst an improvment over the original set up still not perfect.

I've got a set of the updated knuckles and screws coming so will decide what set up to run then.

Oh great, looks like I'll be doing the spherical ball joint mod next then. Going to run mine this weekend after a track building session at gas jockey's place so see how everything holds up...

I think these bearings will hold up ok for racing or general bashing, but I did a lot of jumping so am not that surprised at the damage.

The hubs still felt fine before removal, all the screws were still tight, and the knuckles undamaged.

If I wasn't getting updated knuckles then I'd just replace the bearings.

I got the revised screw set and knuckles, but the revised screw set system is still are not perfect for the plastic c-hubs.

So I've ended up modding the standard hubs to be similar to the revised ones, and using moddified T-Nuts, fully tightening the screws so that the bushing is tight against the hub and rotates in the plastic c-hub, pictures to follow.

Cut down T Nut and Standard Bushing Drilled Out To 6mm (On Right)

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG1093.jpg

The T Nut is cut short so the bushing is tight against the knuckle

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG1095.jpg

Fitted, the bushing now rotates in the plastic C-Hub and has a nice smooth action with little slop, please note for alloy c-hubs I would use the revised knuckles and screws, I'm using this set up as I found the revised set up was not suitable for plastic hubs due to the flex in the hubs meaning the t nuts were loose in the knuckle and over time this would wear the knuckles holes.

I ran 5 tanks at the weekend with the cabbie bearing mod in alloy knuckles, it's working perfect...zero slop and nice and smooth...i think that mod also worked in the plastic hubs

Was that my bearing mod ? If so yes it works fine in the plastic hubs but as per a few posts back on taking it apart a few of the bearings were broken.

As already said I had been jumping it so was not surprised at the damaged bearings.

I re-did it this way to allow use of the revised knuckles

oops, knew it was someone in the UK...I haven't taken mine apart yet but they definitely took some heavy hits at gas jockey's track.
i like the t nut mod...where do you get such a thing?

Yeah, if I hadn't taken mine apart they would still be going good.

The T nuts I used came from the cable clamp of a 415V Electrical Socket from where I used to work, sadly as I don't work there I can't get them anymore. But google "T Nut" and ones used for cabinet making would work also the ones out of the revised screw kit (if shortened) would also work.
