I have 3 bikes; 2 on road and one off road.
My Thunder Tiger TTN is a nitro. I have added aluminum steering shock, GRP treaded tires with orange molded inserts, front brake kit (so it has disc front and rear), aluminum body mounts and the Alleven nylon crash bar kit. A nmh hump pack as well I guess is a hop up but does anyone ever use a 4 cel? I also put a Traxxas Slash mg servo on the throttle and brake as the stock servo doesn't do much for stopping 2 mechanical brakes. I just picked up extra glow plugs, fuel, stand and a tank today to toss in the spares and be able to drive it's maiden voyage. Nothing beats the sound of a nitro bike, and they handle different than the electric with the weight
First 2 pics is stock out of the box and beside the electric.
The electric is an older Thunder Tiger FM1E. It is discontinued though you can get the TTe which looks like the red one. The stock motor and esc is really slow, but I have a Schulze brushless waiting. Today I picked up a new silver 3 spoke front rim and disc brake set for a nitro bike, and a swing arm and almost all the parts to put a disc brake on back (just need calipers now)... and to order some tires and a motor

The dirt bike is a Duratrax DX450. I have make a rear fender protector out of some cutting board. On 3s lipo it is a wheely machine. it's basically all stock and a hoot to drive. I am just waiting for a new one way for the gyro. Out of stock until mid march. Running in loose dirt is a kille.
lots of pics here and what I have tried in for batteries.

I've got an Anderson 450 (same as duratrax but brushed) and an ARX450. The Anderson is one tough little bike, it got run over by a 5T going WOT and no damage! Not the fastest bike in stock brushed trim so I fitted a 15T mod motor. It went a hell of a lot faster then until the spur gear gave up.
ARX I only used a few times and that is a fast machine straight out of the box but as the saying goes the faster they go the harder they hit.........need to fix some minor damage to the front end on that one!
The Anderson did seem to handle better than the ARX but did not get anough run time on the ARX to really make a comparison. The larger size of the ARX is deffo more my thing.

ARX is so expensive.
I raced mine at the indoor 10th scale track. ran in novice class lol. bike took a beating. turns were far too tight to make though. I had chicanes that were basically switchbacks and to transition I basically had to stop, then got bumped as I held up traffic. if I pulled over I got stuck in the loose dirt, which filled up my one way. on frosty ground it was sure fun... pavement. I can't wait to try it on a bigger track that's packed a bit. bmx track will be awesome

there was one stand at Nuremberg that had the ultimate bikes...AR racing is the brand, these are very high quality and expensive looking...the suspension was just like full scale but smaller...I think these must be the bugatti of 1/5 bikes ..but then again I could be wrong, i know bugger all about 1/5 bikes but as far as engineering and function goes these were like the real thing...damn the suspension was like a real MXer

The arx is actually 1/4 scale. the new venom is also 1/4. an arx roller to be landed in canada will be over $800. I can buy a couple maybe 3 others for that money... I've been watching Jenna build that bike since day one. I used to have a couple ricky's (radio shack dirt bikes 1/4 scale) and he made hop ups for that bike, and a nitro conversion... then decided to make his own. dude is an artist.
I'll bring the bikes over so you guys can try them out. we just need a lighted parking lot after we finish bashing the gassers to run. even the nitro is pretty quiet with the stock muffler. the electric will still be stock so something slow to try first and get the feel.

$800 sounds a bit steep, we retail the base model rollers for just over $500 aud. I reckon the ARX is worth it for what you get.

I can't find the vid i took of the suspension travel...man it was so smooth and progressive...just like the real thing ...i should have taken some pics of the motogp road bikes they had....wow they were cool

Well I had an NF 501 race kit. the electric version. on road bikes. very nicely machined. they handle different than the Thunder Tiger.
NF is the top stuff for on road, ARX is the top for dirt bikes. exchange rates might be different now but it is still a lot of money compared to the Duratrax. it's just a bash toy as nobody races them here so I had trouble justifying spending that much on something I was unsure about
the Duratrax I got from tower hobbies on ez pay... final payment just came off the credit card today
well looks like I have another day off. I feel like crap but heading out to get some fresh air shortly (and taking my bike and TB2 hehe), I just have to unpack my car first

ya well the new tt is just about out ;) I am on rc groups too LOL
Got to run the new bike in a bit. I was holding the camera tripod in between 4th and 5th fingers while I was driving. I'll make a mount next time. This is factory glow plug, 30% nitro. fuel was still spitting though I had to richen the bottom end right away or it was driving away... I need to make a path to the idle screw. I could see it from the side but the angle to get a screwdriver in was blocked by crap... more later
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn181/Pipeous/RC/Thunder_Tiger_Bike/th_DSCI0001-2.jpg (http://s304.photobucket.com/albums/nn181/Pipeous/RC/Thunder_Tiger_Bike/?action=view¤t=DSCI0001-2.flv)
after this I ran the other stuff. the TB2 was having sticky issues with the throttle linkage. I had the brakes turned down before starting and hadn't noticed anything bench testing until I increased the brake throw. then odd stuff happened with the carb sticking. no kill switch installed yet (just arrived in the mail today)... I did a small vid clip of that but haven't uploaded.
later I took the bike out but I didn't video. bud has it I just have to see it uploaded somewhere.... have to go over and show him forum stuff... anyway. I jumped a speed bump a couple times and my rx pack wire was close to edge and I think it got cut or shorted anyway... had a runaway with the bike and slammed a curb head on. it's amazing what these things can take for abuse man... not even bent forks... it hit hard enough the rear wheel slid forward and chain is slack but forks work fine. that spring in the front for rake angle is a blessing...

I need to add a stabilizing shock now to the steering. I had it up to near full speed a couple times later (video was basically my break in time, haven't even touched the needles.. runs fine to me) and it has a bit of speed wobble..

It's not RCG, one thing we are really spoilt for over here in the UK is RC bikes and RC bike racing. We have quite a few brittish manufacturers as well. I used to do quite a bit of racing with RC bikes.

I have all the parts now but 1 to go all mechanical disc brakes on my fm1e. 2wheelhobbies will be gettinhg an order shortly

Thing you got to remember is the RC bike scene isn't massive anywhere. Here in the UK, they still only get between 20-30 turn up for a national meeting. Thing that puts most people off is that they are not as easy to drive and they don't react quickly to driver inputs on the steering. So it's seen overhere not so much as racing more of who can keep it on it's wheels. You'd think there was a huge following looking at reviews and videos in the UK but it really isn't.

I went from helis to bikes. I wanted a challenge... but after I smacked head first into that curb yesterday, and all I did was move the rear wheel forward and ripped 2 spots on the body... 2 of the 3 guys I was with asked how much are those things... well you know rcp just got 9 bikes the newer model than mine... I bet I just sold 2 bikes
they are tvp's like a savage (or xt5 ;) ) and tough as hell. I used to take mine to the hobby shop track in their front lot. used to be setup every weekend. pay your fee and run all day. I got smacked by a few cars while learning to make it around a track, a tight one...
my brushless bike will be on 3s lipo and be stupid. I just really like the weight and feel of the nitros.. maybe it's just me but I have had a few of both and the nitros just feel smoother.. not sure if that's the right description. I had a mamba 5700 in one, a schulze and plettenberg in another... this one will have a schulze with brake disabled (thermals if I use a lot of brake, bashing it's fine) and I have a new front wheel. front and rear brakes... man just got a box of parts...
being able to walk into a hobby shop that just got boxes and boxes of bike stuff, and I got to open and sort through everything... I just started a pile of my own and tossed things on... I think it's the first time I haven't used Bruce at 2wheel... that said I have an order in shopping cart there now. still need calipers, tires, matching silver 3 spoke rear wheel. proper body mounts.. it'll be fun to build. then I'll sell it to a local and find another one to build lol... maybe

Got the new Alleven Hydraulic steering stabilizer installed. I had to drill and tap the frame for one screw otherwise it was a direct fit. It's adjustable too. just unclip the clevis from the servo horn and move it up or down for more or less dampening. nice piece. Alleven stuff is nice.
I am also gluing tires on my new rims for the electric and putting the disc brakes on. I'll get some more pics as I go

If you get a bike, get a 1/5. I was just out with the yamaha and jumping the speed bumps here and doing wheelies for the kids... I didn't flip it once this time woohoo. actually getting to control my wheelies now... that's the first bike other than the dirt bike that could wheely.
they are so stable. my little venom I just picked up is cool too but it is twitchy and doesn't handle rough... you can run over manholes in a 1/5 but a pebble with a 1/8 is scary... the best driving one is the nitro, it's heavier and so stable. GRP tires on both 1/5's like the real thing and Bruce at www.2wheelhobbies.com is amazing to deal with and carries so many hop ups you just can't get anywhere else.
the dirt bike has a gyro in the rear wheel and the easiest to drive for sure
Pipeous
05-13-2010, 05:40 AM
here's a couple pics of the venom. I got it because the guy could drive it stock but when he added all the hop ups couldn't drive it. The dual front brake discs were a problem. when leaning the fall to the outside and drag causing it to fall over and stuff, making it unpredictable. I glued some lexan inside the fenders to act as runners and they hold the discs from falling out without much drag at all. I stretched the triple forward as well, then added some thin lead to the bottom of the body. I also dremmeled the rider out (can't see that part as it's hidden by the bike) and cut his weight in half. even the head has been hollowed out... I broke the front end doing wheelies and hit a pine cone on one wheel. was a cool looking crash... part is $1.79 but I ordered the aluminum one... as well as another set of tires and wheels as I am going to line the front rim with some lead to get more gyro action and plant it.
yup, they look awesome on display but also fun to play with... these are about the only rc I take out to run by myself...

to save the rear fender, I took a small piece of cutting board and made a sort of skid plate for the back, and if you dip the front springs in grease about 1/4 inch they aren't so bouncy
The dirt bikes are a hoot. I beat the living hell out of mine. and ya I took #1 because I was the first one in our area to get one (and was my hockey jersey number too)

and the same nylon crash bar as my nitro so can stock the same size.. I have busted all the stock ones many times. I had to shave the ends of an alleven one to fit the holders.

the shock is the next to get fixed. the seal blew on mine before I even got to drive it. I just compressed the rear wheel out of the box. modified a larger clip into mine but I blew that out last time. 5k dif fluid works in the back.. I am going to try out a revo shock though

I've seen a few videos on youtube of the bikes, the are fun to watch. I am getting into crawlers now, haha never would of thought I'd like to play with them cuz they are slow but something about them has been keeping me interested. Maybe cuz they are slow like me, haha I think a 1/5 crawler might be cool though. So I have to ask ya Pipeous, are the bikes hard to control?
Pipeous
02-16-2011, 09:21 AM
The bikes take a bit of a learning curve initially. turning takes practice. once you get the hang of how they turn it gets easier. the biggest problem people have is they think like driving a car. say you are turning left. if you turn to far the bike rides on the crash bars. this causes the bike to slide out. so because it isn't turning, people turn the wheel more, which lifts it up on the crash bar making it slide out worse. you have to turn without relying or using the crash bars much at all. if you get on the crash bar you need to give a little brake and turn the opposit way to stand it up a little. and very light control inputs. I don't move the wheel more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch either way.
start off in a big huge open lot and just work on going in circles smoothly, then try figure 8's.. if there is something to hit, you'll probably hit it but the likes are tvp style frames so pretty tough. and there is a spring load to the front forks so if they hit they have give. called a crash back system

I had a venom. it was screaming fast. I bought it from someone that upgraded it like crazy and then couldn't drive it. I had to modify the crap out of it to make it driveable. the brushless was way too much motor for the bike. 75% epa was thre highest I could get it up to but I needed perfect pavement. every pebble and crack affects it. the 5th scale I jump off speedbumps. I even did some crazy jumps off loading dock stuff at my old detail shop. The worst wipe out I ever had was after I finally figured out how to make a steering stabilizer. I had never been past speed wobble speed. My bud DVO was there with me... haha. oh man, I was in this huge lot and went down and got max revs and no wobble. I was vibing. oh ya.. I went to the far end of the lot and ran at us. I held max revs for a good 15 seconds. I was getting close to the end so touched the brakes a bit... dam manhole cover jumped out at me... nose planted and it flipped upside down. it passed us chest height upside down about 15 feet away. was airborn for a good 25 feet too. it tumbled and flipped (the bike club, who let us use their training lot is sitting on their bikes watching this thing bounce towards them)... then parts started to come off... total damage. broken rim, bent swing arm pin, sheared the steering ball stud off the triple, bent pipe and rear frame. the bent parts got straightened out, about $30 in parts and it was good to go again
