I lived out your way back in the 80's for a while. I became what was called promo manager for sooter studios. I ran phone rooms, taught people to do it and ran around canada setting up temp studios (I even shot for a while until I burned my eyelid in Hanna, Alberta with a match head caught it between the lids closing my eye in time. save the inside but wow did that hurt). never was outside BC in my life and came to Winnipeg late nov. dec I moved to Brandon. Never knew cold like that in my life. my mustache froze to my beard walking to the office... I got trapped in an elevator in the canada center... such fond memories huh? I loved Manitoba. The friendliest people I met in all my travels was Brandon.

I was at a club there, watching kick axe play. I was sitting alone in my suit and tie, some girl came over and got me to join their table (from the nurses residence) ended up at a party with bikers and suits. coming from vancouver I was like oh no... pretty soon I was playing caps with a big tattoo'd dude on the living room floor. you have to understand I really didn't fit the mold for a manager. I had just left a bar band, big hair days you know, yup I had permed blond hair, looked like a dandelion. I came to vancouver and applied to take vocal lessons with a tenor in the vienna choir, but I had to quit smoking for 6 months before she;d take me. a few lost jobs to make some money and I started telephone sales... I was really good at it. 5 weeks into the job I left to train as a phone room mngr... we arrived in Kelowna for the first promotion of it's kind in Canada and the girl to train me went to the hospital. I ran the office with the accountant... the owners bros started in winnipeg after we were going and we had double the sales... I had some fun motivational games (pie the boss always made sales, I was on commission)... I wore a garbage bag for a suit and every sale made they got to pie me... man they worked hard that day haha. never met my actual boss in person, just over the phone... he brought me to winnipeg to take over his brother's office and see what I could do...

Al was my boss... we were actually called centennial gift books (remember those? yup that was me haha) and we did sooters and a million other company names across canada... the day I met him in person he pretended to apply for a job... the end of the interview he says, I'm Al Barry. next was you wear ear rings? then get a hair cut LOL.. wearing my kokanee beer shirt, went around and ripped my offensive posters down.... but I doubled their sales and they let me do things my way for the next 3 yrs and I trained all the people to run offices. I did that for many years and saw so much of canada. the last couple yrs I was on salary and just went ahead and set up temp offices for the people I trained to come in... I just burned out travelling after so many years... never went further east than manitoba but have been all up through the yukon and stuff
