View Full Version : My Punibolt Rebuild
Isle of Wight Basher

After around 5 litres I'm doing a full nut and bolt rebuild with pics throughout, hopefully might be of help to someone.
Also I might be having to sell it due to continiung unemployment after being made redundant, so this would give the buyer good info as to what they're getting. hopefully not though as this has been my favorite largescale I've owned.
Heres how it is now

Lost a shock spring retainer bottom at the end of the last run, the shock shaft unscrewed itself spitting the retainer off to oblivion and wrapping the spring around the inside of the rear wheel.
Anyone got a spare ?

Yep I saw the kit for shock ends on MMR, but I'm trying to avoid the cost of the complete kit for just 1 item, I'm that skint at the moment.

No problem at all:D
Heres a hint for you and others.
The spring retainer has a small slot in it, I use a small cable tie through the slot and around the spring so if that happens the retainer will stay on the spring! Also a drop of superglue on the thread helps it from unscrewing:yahoo:

Top tip :good idea:
I'll be doing this on the rebuild, I always use superglue on metal to plastic fasteners but as I havent needed to service the shocks yet missed these ones DOH.
Regarding the shocks they are very good, they perform are strong, and seem leak free, we'll see for sure when I strip them.

Right the rebuild proper starts now, throughout the rebuild I'll be replacing the fixings with High Tensile Steel Hex Heads and new Nyloc nuts where appropiate.
All fixings will either be superglued (into plastic), threadlocked (steel to steel) or locknutted (steel -aluminium), I avoid threadlocking into aluminium to avoid seized fixings and having to drill HT steel fixings out of the much softer aluminium.

Please note a longer screw and nyloc nut was used to attach the brace to the top plate, this adds strength and lessens the stresses on the top plates hole.

As english is not my native language, can you explain more what exactly you mean here...
Superglue .... ?? glueing in seconds... - will you be able to ever unscrew things?
Threadlocking ... ??
Locknutting .. ? using the red and/or blue nut lock material
If first and third are correct, what is second...

Super glue used by putting a drop on the screw before screwing it into the plastic, this gives a certain amount of resistance to loosening and creates a stronger thread in the plastic. They unscrew fine.
Threadlock, using a meduium grade threadlock on metal to metal screws, to prevent lossening. Such as this http://www.richies-rc.com.au/catalog/-p-44.html?currency=GBP&osCsid=0a2697a7957726638e3364ed1ae7b788
Locknutting, yes you're correct, i.e using nyloc nuts to avoid loosening

Never tried shoo glue myself, interesting though, does it go off fully ?
I only apply a drop of glue, the thin stuff used for gluing tyres. The idea being to coat the inside of the thread, I've never damaged a thread, quite the opposite.

Center Diff Assy Stripped
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0836.jpg
Found Center Diff had "used" used a small amount of oil (100.000wt) and slightly contaminated with dirt, I could just top it up as it's not that bad, but as I'll either sell it or mothball it I'll order some new stuff.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0826.jpg
as I'm ordering oil I'll now check the shocks.
Isle of Wight Basher
03-23-2010, 08:56 AM
After checking all 4 shocks, I'm very impressed, the oil is not contaminated and I only had to top up the rear shocks by about 5mm, as the oil is in such good condition it shows the seals work well.
Also the shafts are all good, and I've been jumping it with the inevitable bad landings and tumbles.
Heres a pic of one
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0833.jpg
I'll order oil for the diffs and Allen head fixings today, so will continue stripping the various sub assembleys until the postman delivers.
Isle of Wight Basher
03-23-2010, 10:57 AM
Diff oil ordered, I'm going for 100,000wt centre, 70,000wt front and 30,000 rear.
To keep costs down I've ordered 100,000 and 30,000wt in 50ml bottles.
As the diffs take around 30ml I'll be able to mix the remaing 20ml of 100,00wt to 10ml of 30,000wt to make the 70,000wt for the front diff. To be more exact it's 21ml to 9ml.

Stripped and cleaned Center Diff
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0838.jpg
Found the Center Diff rear drive cup to have signs of wear, both sides the same, about 1-2mm, however the front drive cup shows very minimal wear.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0841.jpg
So for the rebuild I'll swap them round to even wear, plus it'll be interesting to see if the same wear happens again to the rear one only.
At £20 a pair it's worth getting some for the next rebuild/spares, I'll compile a list as I go.

Center Diff Assy Rebuild
I'm aiming to change all screws to Allen Head type screws rather than cross head self tappers, so first I tap the holes with a suitable screw.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0873.jpg (http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/?action=view¤t=CIMG0873.jpg)
Then on assembly I use a very small amount of superglue, just enough to coat the inside of the thread and provide some resistance to loosening.
All screws replaced on servo plate

All screws replaced including the self tapping screws used on the linkages (never liked this), these I've used Nylocs on.

For the brake linkage I've used 3mm rod threaded on one end with Nyloc nuts to allow easy adjustment of brake bias, and sway bar collet/ball, these sit nieatly in the brake cam linkage

Steering Servo
After opening it up I found this, you can see the build up of Dust? around 2 of the chips (voltage regulators I think), and the impressions left in the case bottom.
I think the dust? is burnt material from the case.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0904.jpg
Looks OK after cleaning
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0905.jpg
Hitec-5745MG servos used to suffer with burning out similar chips, their solution was to add heatsink material over the chips.
I've added some High Temp Adhesive Foil (very sticky and thin, designed for mould heaters etc) DONT use anything else and make sure it's stuck down well, as if it comes loose it could short out the servo PCB.
This should provide better heat dissipation as the foil will act as a heatsink.
Also on rebuilding the servo I found it best not to tighten the case fully, tighten it up then loosen the screws slightly to avoid putting too much pressure on these chips and the PCB itself.

Re-assembling the servo gears
Rotate the left gear until it is central, i.e no movement of the motor
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0909.jpg
Put the gear on the motor
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0910.jpg
Then the last gear (forgot a photo of this one, Doh) just drops in the center, making sure you don't move the other gears.
Test it and if it's not still in the neutral position, remove the center gear and re-position it.
Screw the case together, not too tight as mention earlier.

What type of materials should high tensile hex screws be..was thinking about popping down to Screwfix to get some.

It has, but I think it's the down to the case rather then the electronics, the metal centre section could do with being 0.5mm taller, as if you fully tighten the case it starts to bind up, this would cause unwanted resistance for the motor and could (in the worst case) overload the voltage regulators.
Try loosening the servo screws a small bit.
I use High Tensile STEEL, I don't use Stainless as they are "softer" and it's easier to strip the hex's in them (from my experience)

Soon, I'll be doing one of the sprung diff outputs, and for the c-hub bushing mod I did and maybe more.
I've been a bit sidetracked making LED lights and a basic killswitch, details to follow after the rebuild is completed. :punk:

Well spotted, the spacers are in a container out of sight.
They will be included in the rebuild pictures.

this is (i have said before) a very nice rebuild project.
it is very easy to read through and you have gone through great lengths to explain/show all parts.
well done!

Cleaned bearing, I'm using skateboard bearings with nylon cages and stainless balls, also I lubricate with oil for very free running bearings, or to allow more time between cleaning use grease.

Stripped and cleaned Center Diff
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0838.jpg
Found the Center Diff rear drive cup to have signs of wear, both sides the same, about 1-2mm, however the front drive cup shows very minimal wear.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h42/isleofwightbasher/FTX%20Punisher%20Rebuild/CIMG0841.jpg
So for the rebuild I'll swap them round to even wear, plus it'll be interesting to see if the same wear happens again to the rear one only.
At £20 a pair it's worth getting some for the next rebuild/spares, I'll compile a list as I go.
After stripping down my centre diff, I've noticed more wear on the rear cup as well.

On taking my rear diff apart, I've found 2 pairs of those washers that goes on the outdrive cups..from inside the diff case..its the metal washers that goes on after the rubber o-ring and the plastic shims.
Howerver, the front diff has 3 pairs..I wonder I've made a mistake when I taken it all apart? I was very meticulous about labelling in separate bags, front diff bits, rear diff bits and centre diff bits.
Hope you don't mind me saying, perhaps it would be slightly off-topic. It would be sweet to see complete engine strip down and rebuild =)

Mate, awesome thread, great attention to detail. Nicely done!!
Where it still screws into plastic, how did the new high tensile hex's fit? The screw threads for the rollcage fixings, for example, looks to be different to the new hex's.
Did you CA glue and baking powder it?
Shame you had to sell buddy, new owner is a very lucky so and so!!

Cheers, the HT screws go in very well, cutting their own thread as they go, the original self tappers have a much coarser thread so there's plenty of material to cut the new thread into, the addition of superglue (no baking powder needed) gives a stronger thread too and adds a bit of "threadlocking".
No worries, I'll get another later in the year (hopefully) maybe a Monster Truck.
