Here's a few pics as I opened the box. What a sweet looking machine. I even noticed the threaded part in the front bulkheads so you can add a setscrew to keep the hinge pins in place. That is a very nice touch I wasn't expecting.
Also the rear bulkheads have the alloy dif riser. I thought I was going to have to add that part myself. SCORE!!
Suspension is really stiff and the tires seem really sticky actually. I have a bit of binding in the front wheels but probably just over tightened the wheel nuts a bit. I'll dig through the FG stuff and find some bearing spacers to put in the front knuckles and problem will be solved.
As I work on it, I will take the calipers to the parts to see what is FG compatible for those that are wondering. I plan on ordering many Nutech parts for my FG so it's something I want to look at anyway.
BAH, let the pictures tell the story, I have to go clean the dining room up

I won't have time to get it ready for the weekend. My radio was missing from the box and my kill switch was bought for non Spektrum radios... I also have servos to install, make a battery tray for the body mounts like the FG etc...
we are having a big scale on road bash tomorrow so I am taking this to be on display and I'll have the new catalogue Scott put in on the table too...

Scott went over and above and left my car with his niece, who lives about 8 blocks from me
I have been looking at a real Mustang at work. It's black with chrome highlights. I have a few colors to play with; black, white, chrome, pearl blue and flaming orange... maybe black with some ghost flames/some design...
I'll do the usual google search of real mustangs until I see a design that strikes my fancy
I have to add, these tires have firm inserts. I was sure they were the same as the crap hobby pro tires and wheels but I was wrong. I wanted to try the optional tires but none came?? Chris? Ethan?
Also, my radio was missing in the box (the receiver is in the radio tray though hehe)
The pipe is really nice actually and the side body mounts are very solid. I will add my side guard mod with channel aluminum and door weather stripping. But the mounts are good. My redcat rally I worried about breaking the side mounts when I picked up the car. these are just like the fg ones and every mount comes with the rubber washer for reducing body wear

I didn't manage to get too many pics... I wanted to play. I didn't ask Rich to film as he just got back from doing security at whistler for the olympics and was work 16-18 hr days... he pulled many 24 hr shifts and did some drinking. good stories though for the hour long drive each way to get there today... (he had to zonk out in the passenger seat for a while hehe)
here is why I need another car. I had 3 5th scales in the back seat, 2 motorcycles, tool box, gas can, nitro fuel, charger box, bike parts and fg parts. Rich's slash and baja in trunk with 100 ft garden hose, a couple 100 ft extension chords and his tools and supplies.. I didn't have much room left for anything else
then a pic of Sharkey's Cobalt SS and how much room he has LOL

Ok, so here we go. The rear body mount I shimmed on the 2 lower bolts to tip it forward a touch. The front and rear body mounts were a bit far apart and fighting each other... I shimmed the front mount with nuts to raise it... I still had to cut the sides of the body on a bit of an angle so no side body stripes... and I cut the front off or it would be scraping under hard brakes. well it's mounted now, and the brake doesn't drag

I washed the body when I got home from work, it's drying so I am going to be doing some mechanical stuff while I wait. I'll mask and paint today. it's a pretty basic paint job going on. no outer film so I'll have to mask the outside too. I'll just be doing 2 chrome stripes over the top, black body. side stripes would accent the angle of the body line. I'll have to order a different light kit, I need 6 red and have 4. I'll put that set in the SC8e.
We were supposed to run tomorrow but looks like rain now, so I will just tinker and see how it goes. it'll be runable. I'll do the main stuff today/tonight and get ready for tomorrow just in case.
Chris, what shock oil is in these things stock?

Had to order a better light kit for the stang. this has the working brake light that gets brighter when brakes applied. I need 6 reds for the back to look right
Rear end is off, motor is out. I changed the lower ball ends to the metal ones. takes a bit of loktite to keep them from turning. almost wondering if I shouldn't have stayed plastic but we'll see how it goes. I might see if I can fit a loknut. I added a loknut to the droop screw allready as I could turn it by hand

Now the motor gets the kill switch and put back in. Then I attack the front some.. I will do the shocks last when I get it all worked out... I should also get to masking the body and spraying some paint soon

Truck slicks will go on the TB2 with a Cooper body (or F1 tires. we'll see what deal pops up), truck stays a truck. The car will be a car ;)
I put 60wt Losi oil in the back. Might still be too thick but it's a starting point anyway. Those dif cases holds a lot of dif oil... kicked the hell out of my new 50k..

Pipeous I haven't seen that you found a six light brake set yet. why not just add 2 more LEDs to the rear wiring LEDs are very low power consumption and I am sure it would not over power the controller. If you look at big Es Mega monster his has 6 rear lights that I did for his truck two are blinkers and four are brake lights.

ordering the other set was cheap enough. now I have lights for all my cars and trucks... just the bikes left to do. the kits they sell are so cheap and complete. good wiring too. after spending this much another $20 is not a big deal.
and the set I had will go in my sc8e. it came yesterday. finally a kit I get to build... I am in heaven. almost want to forgo playing to rip into the kit :D

Ok, it's all back together now, just have to get the electronics setup. I'd also like to try some different springs as these are too long, especially the front. I have the adjusters backed right off to the caps... and an odd thing is the spring retainer... you have to remove the shock bottom to get the spacer off. I just removed the bottom totally to work on them and installed before I pu the shocks back on the car
I ordered
057634 8mil , 2pcs left thread, with 4 spacers included OD 8mm ID 5mm 3mm thick. these fit the lower and upper arms...
057633 are 8mill , 2pcs left thread, 2pcs right thread, 5mill holes in the balls with 4 included standoffs that accept a 3mil bolt.
these were going on the tie rods but I needed 6mil.. I got 2 packages too so I guess these will get used on the semi for the arm ends and such, and for the tb2. semi takes right thread, tb2 takes right... well more goodies to work with
057632 are 4mil , 4pcs right thread.
I got these for the rod off the servo, but... need right and left thread... I will eventually use these but I have to make a rod myself now

I have used fg 1/2 lock nuts on my steel rod ends P/No 04472/02 LH, 04472/03 RH threads, I see Wurth fasteners also list these nuts but not tried my local distributor yet for them. (see pic)
I have also found the front shocks are too long, they bottom out before the chassis hits the deck so I have shortened the shock bodies by 10mm. I have also done alot of other mods and will show in my thread once I get back onto it!

That lcd radio that comes with these cars is absolutely sweet. Back lit lcd, 14 model memory, easy menu to navigate..
Chris, can I get extra rx's for this radio? I might have to sell off my others.
I put a Turnigy BEC in with a 6k maxamps 2s lipo. that radio box has barely anything in it now. Took out the power switch and sealed the hole as the bec has a power switch. I shoe goo'd it to the side of the rx box. It has a 4 led power meter built in too that is bright
Thanks for the tips Bryan. I agree the shocks and springs are too long for the front. I might have to adapt an fg spring... and you cut 10mm off the shock body? I'll have to see if I even have a tap that size. makes sense to me though... I was allready looking at buying another set of shocks. or at least cutting the springs down

Ok, the front shocks really bugged me, even the back I wasn't happy with. I got a bag of off road springs from Sharkey a while back. I have Red, Yellow and Silver... hardest to softest. I also have a bunch of parts.
I took the stock spring retainers off and replaced with the larger plastic fg ones. they fit no problem and are actually not as tall as the Nutech ones which gave me some room to play. I tried the reds on back first as there is way more weight. I also inclined the shocks in on the tower for more lean angle. Same with the front. With the stock setup the chassis front won't bottom out and there is zero droop and the arms actually were above level.
Now I actually have some sag in the arms, the chassis bottoms out front and back and I have down travel when I lift the chassis to play with... Now I can actually dial the suspension in...
And it looks so much better with some color I think. The only drawback is the front spring is touching the arm a touch at the top but it doesn't affect the performance. I could probably cut 2mm off the shock shaft end and screw the adjuster down and be done with it.
There's also a couple pics of the new bec. it has a power meter when plugged in, and a red light at bottom when power is turned on

I am on days off now, well detailing a van friday... have to fix his bmw's mags too. they opened a stereo and wheel shop. he cleaned his wheels and grabbed a kitchen sponge to wash them. used the wrong side... have to see if I can polish the scratches out of the clear coat... I was going to sell the detailing business, just haven't advertised it yet. I am getting too old to be working all the time. I want to play with my toys more now haha
just trying to adapt what I have... next is to trim the shock bottoms a bit (part the shaft screws into. the fg spring retainer is lower but I could drop it another 3-5mm and the spring top would clear the arm. I don't have any room to even make an insert for the top of the springs right now
have to get it ready. the semi is needing some love soon and I have parts to install in the TB2. TB2 goes on the table after I clean the garage. time to turf a bunch of stuff out and organize. I am going to get rid of this desk and get large shelf brackets to put the 5th scales on. they just need to slide under the chassis. move the shelves a bit... turf my printer... find my work table under all that crap...

I finally ran the GT5R today. First it runs good, has good power, the pipe is actually not too bad. Nothing fell off, came apart etc and I ran nearly a tank in a dusty parking lot. with all the heavy winds we have been getting, there were pine cones and branches to avoid... all in all I am happy with the way things worked out... except
These tires are absolute crap LOL. I played with setup, changed camber, castor, toe in, ride heights... I got ti to somewhat stick but even had exponential like 75% on throttle to try to not over rev or it just spun out. turned my steering dual rate way down to about 50% too
Another odd thing, and you will see once rich uploads the videos, is the chassis flex with the back body mounts. when I push on the back body mount with body off, it tweaks enough to pull the throttle... when I put the body on, it put pressure on the body post and I had to trim the throttle toward brakes so far I couldn't get full throttle anymore. I am going to have to get different tires (Chris, please send some good tires with Scott's next order, I will pay for them). I even did a big burnout to try and soften the tires... it was a real challenge to drive.
I also got some driving done with my dirt bike and we got some cool videos of me beating the hell out of it.
we had 3 in my car so I pulled the semi out and left it at home. wish I had brought it to try those tires out... I am going to look closer at the chassis tonight and I am probably going to run some aluminum channel down the chassis. I can drill through the chassis and countersink it, thread the aluminum. one piece will go under the clutchbell no problem. I'll look closer later... I have my SC8e half built and want to finish that tonight. Tomorrow I start tweaking the chassis on the GT5R (or I swap my semi stuff around and make this my semi, mount the Nutech bling on my fg comp chassis)

Here's the GT5R. eventually I was able to make some ovals but it was getting pretty frustrating to drive with these tires. I tried adjusting a lot of things and it got better but still not good. I could tweak the suspension more but I think tires will be the biggest improvement now... maybe lighten the oil in the dif...
the odd thing to look at is 3 mins in. the pressure on the rear body post actually throttled the car... I'll look closer at that this week and maybe add some chassis braces. I might just go to a plastic body mount that has some give too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flU5Qoe7oO0
this is with the body on. I had to turn the trim towards brakes a ton once the body was on since it pushed on the body mount. I wasn't actually getting full throttle. I was experimenting with the throttle exponential here and trying to kick it out and adjusting the expo to tame things down... I had changed every setting on the back and it was better but... next time out I am tossing the semi tires on to see

Looking great there Barry! Ditch those std tyres and get some PMT or GRP good tyres on any RC car are 70% of the set-up.
Chassis flex easiest way would be to bend the sides up to right angle but then you would have to make up new side body mounts. Maybe try a straight rod from the gear carrier bolt to the front suspension rear bulkhead!

I agree Bryan. I swapped my race truck chassis for an FG comp chassis. it had the same chassis as this. that hole where the exhaust comes out is probably the issue. my race truck came with a stock crap exhaust and shot out the bottom, why they made such a big hole. the Nutech only really needs a hole big enough to access the header bolts so maybe Chris can look into making that smaller.
I get lazy when I am on my graveyard shifts. Woke up a short while ago. I really should pop the GT5R on the table and start stripping. I also need to tweak the springs some. I might have the suspension too stiff. I made custom dual rate springs for the truck. those tires are so friggin expensive I had to get it dialed with what I have, but these stock tires are really hard and now feel slippery after the run
I might just remove the back body mounts too until I can find some plastic ones. If I'd realized this was going to happen I'd have done it right away and mounted the body better. oh well. that's why I got this car, to tinker and work it out
George should be able to hook me up with tires. he has about 2G in pmt and grp tires and runs with us. He busted his collarbone in 2 spots so hasn't been out yet this year.
And Dino just emailed that we should have some Jet Pro pipes available very soon for this car.

Ok car is on the table and it's as I suspected. the flex is around the chassis opening for the exhaust. I put the car on a phone book. I can actually flex it up and down a considerable amount. This is going to wreak havoc on the suspension when on and off throttle.
I am going to cut a square plate to cover the hole, and drill/countersink from the bottom and thread it through, with a bit of cutting around the large motor mount. I can't put the rails on like another fg I had done as the tank covers too much chassis. I see there are holes in the chassis to accept and FG tank, and I might go that route as well. I have some spare fg tanks here that just need fuel line grommets (I could save the tank for my TB2 anyway). Then I could run some square aluminum channel down the sides of the chassis to stiffen it up.
I was going to do a video to show what I mean but the battery is charging, so it'll be a half hour before I can get one done. and the semi tires won't fit with the body on. I even considered tossing some f1 tires on but again no go. me thinks I need to order another semi body and tires but that's almost as much as this whole car cost LOL
maybe I should just hunt ebay uk for another comp chassis?

Here's a couple vids to show the flex. I am looking for a thicker piece of flat aluminum now to put on the chassis over the hole to reduce the flex a bit.

I found an fg comp chassis on ebay uk. am just working out the shipping charges with him now. same chassis I put on the semi. the car will get put aside for a few weeks now while I wait for the chassis. I was going to make a plate to go over the engine hole but there isn't much room with the current gas tank. so I'd have to change the gas tank to be able to make rails. I don't mind cuz I am changing the tanks anyway for the new chassis, and going to make a carbon servo tray and use fg steering links to have the push/pull setup. that is a much stronger setup (and I have spare fg links). any heli guys doing ccpm setups will understand.
I was just a little perturbed. it's like buying a comp car and the chassis is like a wet noodle. I have shown issues that needed addressing and not one comment from chris.. I understand the off road stuff is the popular sale item, but I had planned on promoting these to my fellow locals. And I knew the tires would suck and had made a special request to have other tires shipped out, which never came. I wasn't asking for free... I pay for my stuff. I paid for all the upgrades to fix my pre production tb2.
Tires are brutal, chassis is way too flimsy, shock springs are way too long (you should also shorten the shock ends on bottom, the shocks are a bit too long. I am going to drill new holes and dremmel them off) with the fg spring retainer being lower profile and drilling a new hole in the end, it will give some room to actually adjust the shocks. otherwise they sit at full extension no matter what you do, unless maybe adding 5lbs of lead on the car.
I'll make this car work but it's going to become more FG now

Don't worry Barry I have spoken to Chris about all these issues and yes they will be doing changes, I have suggested a 8mm comp style chassis but he is first looking at a 7075 chassis first. I mite have to find a sample and send to him:punk:
I think a brace like this will also help with the flexing of the std chassis as well as a brace on the other side forward.

to be fair the GT5-R is great for the money,i think its unfair to look for a comp chassis for this price. the only thing that ever gave me trouble was the diff cups and they too now i have heard are sorted.
but they still saw a lot of hardship with me to wear them down.

i no were your at but i was with barry when he first started his tb2 i almost shart my pants the servos were going nuts. lol and the car is hella cool but i seen him not even push he just went to tune it and it all of a sudden reved. i thought it was him tell i looked at the controller and it was not in his hand :wasn't me:. then i seen him put a lil presure on it and it started to idle really high. then he went to put the body on and with the body on it was constantly runing idle high. and i can see why barry's pissed all he has gotten from chris is a bunch of emoticons. not (were working on it) just a :excited:. there is defiantly a issue at hand that needs to be taken care of

I expect problems from my TB2 as it's a pre production. I read your thread Dan about adjusting the shocks, but you can't adjust these shocks. It sits at full extension with the spring retainer loosened off to the shock cap. The springs are too long, spring retainers sit too high on the shaft and the shock ends are a bit long...
My throttle setting when the body is off is fine, but the body pushes hard enough on the rear posts to flex the chassis enough the throttle was engaging the clutch (I had to turn my trims way back to the point I didn't have full throttle anymore). I am surprised nobody else pointed this out right away.
No it's not an FG Comp. but it is the flagship on road car for Nutech and to have such a nice car have a chassis like this kills me. Don't cut the hole out in the bottom where the header is. we don't need the space for a square can exhaust since we get a tuned pipe anyway. 2 holes drilled for the header bolts would be enough. could even leave it solid. My FG Sportline chassis had the same hole but I never had this kind of flex...
see, what my friends said, is if the chassis is made from inferior aluminum, then what are the rest of the parts like? and how can you argue? People want to buy a car like this and drive it, not change a bunch of stuff just so it is useable. That is why I am putting this stuff on here ... to make sure further models have the changes made. Even a 7075 chassis with less holes... you also have to take into consideration the recess' for the motor mount bolts. these also will flex as the metal is thin there. I looked it over to try and decide whether to mod or get another chassis. To make a plate it would have to be cut around the motor mounts to extend under the motor, and the tank should be raised a tad to slide it under there, just covering the hole won't do. you'd need some overlap to get strength. so a thicker chassis? better aluminum? both.... or just get your hands on a comp chassis and do something like that.

I bitch a bit but it's part of the process. New chassis, tank, servo tray, good tires and a Jet Pro pipe. oh baby. oh dam, I should have seen if FG supply had a shock spring set for on roads.
I'll work this thing out and make it handle. it took a while to get he semi where I have it now and lots of experimenting... Even Bryan and I are doing things differently so not much help in setups...
I'll look at the chassis again once it is apart. I will probably adapt it, make a roller with what stuff I have here and get someone a cheap car to start out. I have almost enough stock fg parts to make another car. I can order in some nutech things to fill the gaps.
oh and I met a plastics vac forming shop today. I went to go detail a car and the customer wasn't home. driving back through the industrial area (I hate Friday traffic) I followed a truck. they do all sized stuff so I will go see them when I get a chance and maybe get some bodies done. I'll have to make a mold for them to work with

I still think the std chassis is good but just needs more refining even with the soft flexing chassis. I think with softer springs at the right length and correct weight oils it can perform well in my first outing with it I only changed the springs and tyres and went well against FG's. The body mounting is first and easiest to change but re-drill the body mounting holes.
But I want more form it so have now changed it heaps from original by using some FG parts as that is the best thing about this car it is compatible to FG.

New shoes for the GT5R. GRP extra soft on back and soft on front. I got 3 pairs of fg progressive springs too so I put reds on front and the orange/yellows on back. I still have a pair of the yellows to work with too that are a little softer. They fit the Nutech shocks perfectly and actually are a bit shorter so provide some droop. I have replaced the spring retainers back to stock ones and as you can see, I can actually use the adjusters now... I was up late getting ready, just realized looking at the pics I put one front spring on upside down. easy enough to fix... I was also able to get the lean angle in on front... and I changed the position of the front brake and the carb linkages on the servo horn

Wel we stopped at a lot and ran today, just waiting for my bud to upload the video (he's doing a photobucket version for you Chris)... I have to say. holy crap. These tires are the bomb. I was actually trying to spin out. Only when on power heavy out of a corner or when I hit a puddle. it rained today and was misty and cold...
I hate to admit this, but the Mustang outhandles my baby now with this setup. I was throwing the car around the lot today. my brakes need to be adjusted a bit for bias and such, but I was scraping the body and bouncing through some rough sections...
I am absolutey giddy. I can't wait to take on the other fg's now with this beast... a couple more tweaks and this will be the best handling road car I have owned... no bs. My old solo in the semi still out revs this motor but it's still new too and needs to open up... I picked the car up by the pipe after about 10-15 mins running and other than a little rub mark on the back window no sign of heat damage at all.. I am amazed how cool the pipe runs... I had to richen the needles a bit since it was cold... but all in all very happy. I think this 26 will go in my rally and getb an ONB full ported g240 for the car

I cut my rear window out last night. Not a heat problem but the pipe was sitting against the window and rubbing in.
We run in that lot often and I know that my bud was on msn with me last night asking what my setup and tires were as he said if he tried to drive his like that it would have been swapping ends... I felt confident enough to hand rich the controller and he too was shocked.
also keep an eye on the bolts through the front brake pads... I found 2 had come loose. Going to have to find a couple longer bolts and go in from behind I think, then add a nyloc nut on the outside of the pads. this will allow external adjustment and keep things tight...
I still want to stop the chassis flex though and let the suspension work. and I bought a chassis (still waiting for it to arrive)...and have my template drawn up for a carbon servo tray ... every car needs carbon to be cool ;)

Like I said, I bitch when I wanna bitch, but I'll give props too. I have like 3 times the money invested in my truck and now this car outhandles it with a small investment. You know with the rough lot, I didn't even notice the little bit of slop in the front lower arm ends... I'll look at modding that part sometime, but for now just need to tweak the brakes and setup a little and call it done. Can't wait to run it against that all alloy Lauterbacher with hydros and crap. he has about 5 grand in it and a good driver... I have never claimed in my life to be the best driver, but I understand the mechanics well. I can setup a car and hand the controller to a good driver and they'd kick butt, so if I can compete with the good guys, I feel good

Ok, I have stripped my chassis down to nothing. I am comparing the GT5R chassis with the FG one I picked up. The good news is I could just drill new holes and use the Nutech servo mounts, but the small motor mount I might have to get an FG, and then an FG side motor plate as the angle will change, and that means the pipe has to go.
I am going to try mounting this mount on the other side of thre motor and just see first. Had to take a break.
Pipeous

I started the chassis swap last night. I'll post a short vid soon. I had to trim some of the alloy parts as the nutech stuff has squared edges and the fg chassis wanted bevelled. a little filing was no problem though...
problem is the motor mounts. the distance of the motor mount holes is dramatic. 2.7 cm. I had just about given up. I looked and no metal to drill holes to use the mounts in the chassis. After a while with the calipers I realized that the small mount, if on the inside of the motor would be really close. I just had to dremmel the motor case a bit for clearance. 2 am out came the dremmel and now it fits.
I was going to just order an fg on road mount but then my pipe would be useless, so I changed the motor mount instead.
Now i am looking at the servos. there is enopugh metal I could use the nutech mounts and drill new holes or just make a carbon servo tray. ...
pics and vid to come of the build shortly

Servo tray is made and servos mounted. I had to use a couple plastic servo mount things from a firehammer set. I will need more nyloc nuts to finish this off...
ok, so I cut standoffs 57mm long to accomodate the servo saver pivot post. I just made some temp ones out of plastic to see where I am sittting. I am going to moun it like this for tomorrow, but after I get some aluminum tube to thread, I'll make new ones and cut them a bit shorter. Then I sill cut the steering post down the same amount on top. I'll have to use a spacer between the tray and brace but will drop the weight down further and make it stronger. I'll know better once I get around to hooking up linkages. I came out here to grab my radio for that.
I used a push pull setup on steering. that really makes things smooth and the servo works to turn on both sides. I like round servo horns as you can always get a nice balance on this type of setup and easier to zero out

I had to do a little trimming and such to get things to fit in front like the back. I put the rear body post back on but it is a bit different now. temp solution.. I tried to first drill out the hole for the body post and was going to toss a pin above and below bit there wasn't enough meat left. I was going t have to dremmel it anyway to shorten the distance to the tower. so I cut it off and ground it back about 3-4mm, drilled through the bottom body clip hole. I drilled and tapped into the metal and ran a screw through. I added some hard foam for a little extra cushioning and spacer. can't think about slamming it with this pipe on now hehe

Today I ran the beast, tons of power holy. good braking etc. I was pretty happy. but later I lost left drive and my dif locked up... one wheel drive posi lol. well it turns out the wheels square came loose, as did the rear brake square a bit, but the big problem was the outdrive shaft seizing in the dif case. gear side. I managed to get it out and sanded the shaft and case with wet dry paper, it's smooth again and I greased the shaft before putting it back in.
I have had 2 alloy difs lock up now. the other was the center dif in my tb2. the central gears in that one are fused to the pins. it had to be something to do with spinning temps and the case alloy. I'd like to see the output shaft area of the alloy cases have a different insert. I think this would solve the problem... my 2 bits

Great looking pics Barry!!
I'm not sure what the issue with the aluminum diffs are from. Maybe the aluminum is too soft?

I concur with an insert on the output side of the alloy cases...steel on alloy isn't too great...my rear already is getting sloppy...thing is not enough meat on the cases to machine for an insert...will be stripping it in next day of 2 to throw in fg gears so will see how much it's worn

Ya Clayton, it's been some late nights recently wrenching this thing to get it going.
I removed the swaybar. with the shocks off the chassis wasn't bottoming out to the table. I have to come up with some plastic type ends that are threaded so they have some twist, then the swaybar won't bind. Have some digging in the bin to go. I just got tired and wanted to pack up last night.
I grabbed a plastic case and extra gears from Scott so had my bases covered just in case.
saw some new technokit alloy adjustable difs on ebay for $75 each complete. sure tempting

Did some more work to mine tonight. I'll take a pic later of the front...
I made a setup sheet and marked down all my mounting locations, camber etc. the back suspension is so stiff, so I decided to put lighter shock oil in and the arms were binding a bit with no shocks. had to do some tweaking but it's smooth now. that said i can't deviate much from 1-2 degree rear toe or the arms bind. all the alloy ends and arms has little flex or play. so I got that sorted and tried 40wt losi oil, then decided 30wt losi, (I got these mondo packs of oil from 20-100 wt). now I have some suspension again. front is still really stiff but I want to drive it first. need a softer setup for the rough lots. semi is softer than this one. aside from the custom dual rate spring. after a bit of travel the semi is a rock lol
on the front the brakes just didn't grab enough for me. stock, the cables come through a guide mounted to the front bulkhead that has eyelets screwed in for the outer cables to fit. the wires part of the cable goes through another aluminum guide, straight, then to the triple clamp for both wires and the part that goes to the servo. even with one of the stock large servos I didn't have enough front brake. I changed the inside one to a plastic fg that was on an angle to face the servo now mounted to the right side like and fg. with that and the new chassis it was better, but I wanted more...
I took the cables out of both. nutech outer casing is slightly thicker than the fg cables so I had to drill the plastic part out a bit. I ran the cables over the front one, not in, then connected them into the plastic one on the inner side. it allowed me to move the clamp closer to where the bend is. this means less flex at that point. now I have brakes that lock up and I can turn my epa down a bit

oh also.... steve and I bumped last weekend we ran. nothing happened to his car. my front body cracked and the aluminum bar the bumper is mounted to bent at a bolt hole...
next change will be a new body and new front bumper, get rid of the hood mount altogether

We had another gtg today and other than some minor glitches, the car is handling really well. I smacled a corner marker and the front bumper is the next thing to go fg... it's far too weak where the mounts are. it's just a rod with posts and screws. the metal is very thin where it bolts to the chassis. I tapped the corner marker but kept going and down the straight the bumper lodged into my wheel and I nearly hit the curb... pics will show what I mean.
I also used the stock steering servo for the front brakes and it packed it in today so I ran with only rear brakes. I was keeping pace with a blinged hydro braked etc etc lauterbacher and ported engine etc. we were pretty even except when I spun out but I could usually close the distance again. steve, george, paulo and I are all pretty evenly matched, especially when it was a tight track.
it rained before we got there but the sun was out by afternoon. we just made the track around the puddles. turned out hot later and traction was good over 90% ... oh ya, front of my body is pretty beat up now too. this is second cracking. good thing it was shoe goo'd with drywall tape

I ran this car more than the semi. it got loose and I just set it aside. left rear lower front bolt to the rose joint fell out. lol... still kicked.
the sanding and greasing the outdrive shafts helped. I burned 2 full tanks plus today on the stang. we hada pick up to stand in for a drivers' stand as well... steve and I both forgot about our cameras until we were packing it up. I took these at home.
so stock servo in this one went, steering servo in the bike went while in a corner, busted a bumper but got an fg bumper to put on, almost a complete honda body (needs a front clip) so ya an fg body going on too. bike servo was stock as is the fr brake servo
the car handles good. the power is close to the lauterbacher's (I got to drive it. he has a high rev clutch spring). semi motor is getting old and showing it's years. still revs to high heaven but slower getting there all the time haha

Hey Pipe, that car is looking very sweet and I'm loving that JetPro pipe, sure wish there was something like that for the FG semi trucks.
I've been doing some research lately for a new car and this one has got my attention. Is nutech addressing some of the issues you had early on like the chassis flex, etc.? Just kinda curious what I'll be up against, for the most part the car looks great, just trying to look for the weak links.

the pipe fits under the honda accord much better than the mustang. I actually need to get a lower rear body mount now. the shape ofthe rear is rounder so clears the pipe better.
this pipe produces big power. my motor is getting better and better. I am really happy with the way my car is handling now. it's getting very close to what I want. for the money, it's a great deal. it's like buying an fg comp. yes I have added a few fg things but you can find used comp chassis on eay uk all the time for cheap. did that mod for my fg and my nutech.
I'd like to see it offered without electronics though ;) ... at least you'd know you need some hitecs or rhinos right away
I've just not had the extra money to ship the semi to Dino. I keep buying crap. and dam the last credit card purchase I made came today... I should have waited aout 4 more days so it'd make next month. wasn't a big purchase but I still had to hide in the shop for peace when I got home from work. I was going to pay all the bills when I finished painting the first building but dam rain is killing us right now. I am just doing more work at the job instead but have to wait for those paydays... dam hold backs. not used to a normal paycheque routine.

I usually swap out the electronics first thing myself, I'm just funny that way.
I can keep an eye out on ebay uk for a chassis and eventually swap it out later down the road.
Damn these onroad cars, they're so addicting.

Well some good news. I was looking over the car last night and deciding what to do. I was considering pulling the engine to toss in the rally and decided to see what's up with the brakes. looks like my cables had stretched a bit and the servo was unable to pull enough to get the brakes to engage. I had to pull the wheels to see and after some adjusting things are fine, so I just tossed the fg lower bumper on with the stock foam (all the holes and such lined up fine).

Decided since I was selling a car, that I made a hyrid...
I took the solo engine with samba 4 pipe, nutech complete rear end, nutech front arms and knuckles with fg bulkheads and brakes (big discs alloy set for offroad, wouldn't fit inside car tires). I went back to single gear, and actually need a 44 spur. I only have 40, 42 and 46 (dremmeled out the center of my 44 for the 2 speed DOH) and the layshaft gear is a 14 I was running a 13. I think it topped out fast on our short tracks but we'll see. I'll add a couple gears to the parts later. all the rod ends are aluminum except steering, I just have to install them sometime. about all I need is a better air filter now and a couple shims on the front arms for some minor endplay.
I really like the nutech layshaft. it has 3 setscrews for the dreaded layshaft gear PLUS it has a lip at the end that will stop the gear falling right off even if the setscrews come loose. I'll give the nutech boys props on that one. I am also using the fg ball bearing steering setup
here's how it sits now

So I guess I should change this to my Futech Race Truck? it's about 50/50 fg and nutech now. I am using the nutech dif and it has held up to about 12 hrs of hard road driving and still holding oil... that is better than any of the fg dif cases I have ever used. I let my ball drives go with the fg dif and maybe someday will swap the internals to fg and get ball drives again, but am quite happy with the nutech dif
when I let some veteran guys drive my truck this weekend, they said it was the best handling 5th scale they had driven in 20 yrs of rc...
I do have one problem. the bladder in a front shock is pooched and oil is squirting out the breather hole on top every time it compresses. I hope we can get rebuild parts
Hey Scott. I sent you an email a while back asking about some parts. I was waiting for a reply before I sent money so I can send all at once... got a grand sitting in my account waiting bud ;)

Truck is actually more Nutech than FG and I have to say it rocks. I had a couple wheel nuts come loose and stripped a steering servo (I hit really hard trying to run some extra laps end of the day. my mistake, should have just packed up)... this truck owns the track... I'll put it up against anything. I was lapping all the cars out there today.
one thing is the aluminum arms and aluminum rod ends. they are a pain to keep adjusted. I am considering going back to the plastic ends as they don't self loosen... I doubt I have enough thread for a jam nut and the teflon tape wore out over time. put me off the straight today... all of a sudden hard left here we go
I lost the same wheel twice today, second time was after installing a new wheel nut. so I removed the washer. I don't think there was enough thread for the nyloc to get a good bite. never came loose after that (knocks on wood)

Sounds like you had a good time. Was the servo the only damage for you?
Pipeous
07-19-2010, 02:40 PM
yup, stripped out the gears. I get those servos from an ebay seller in cali. 2 for $25. been in there for over 2 yrs now... I have scuffs and rubs all over the body. My bud owns the mustang. one point we were running side by side for almost half the track and I got the inside line and pulled ahead but had to brake and he caught my rear bumper... I spun, rolled (big road rash on roof now) landed on my wheels and kept going...
the semi is tough. the uncut bumper behind the body makes a huge difference in durability. I think more guys will be swapping to semis as the year progresses now. they want my tires... my leaky bladder on one shock is a pain. oil all over my bulk and tower up front. I kept driving anyway and that shock is about half full.
the chicane I rubbed that corner marker many a time. I could almost get a straight line if I cut them tight and was a place I gained ground often. that said I punted that yellow milk crate 3 times. surprised how little damage.

a short compilation vid. I put the music together with mixcraft 5, best recording software I have ever played with. there's a little of everything but my futech semi owned the track this day. and the hit at the end did no damage, just a scuff in the lexan.

I got 2 of the spring retainers done. Now inside the cap, since they came loose the o ring inside was disintigrated. So I took the 2 piece cap apart and shoe goo'd them together.. I'll let it setup and fill it. I will see how it seals then
