View Full Version : MMT Question about steering...

Hi all,

I'm having a problem as the truck won't steer full lock to lock; I disconnected the servo and tried to steer it myself by hand but it gets 'stuck' and it won't turn past a certain point even if i try to force it.

Can anyone help?

which holes are you using in the ackerman arm, servo saver arm and hubs? using the middle in the ackerman and outside on the saver and inner on the hubs you should get full lock..also the dog bones will catch on the outdrive lip and prevent full lock

Thanks Moo, i just took it out of the box, i didn't touch anything as far as what holes I was using; but the dog bones are definately binding alot.

Its binding with the dogbones for sure.

how tight are the bones...is your camber dialled in to much jamming them in solid? the diff cups slide in and out of the diffs so don't want to be forced right up against the diff case

to eliminate the parts take off the turnbukles at the hub and see if it's the saver end or the hub end

How many o-rings are in each drive cup?

roccos_van
03-26-2010, 04:00 AM
OK i fixed it. The dog bones seem to be a touch too long they have absolutely no play in them. I had one o-ring on each side (inner and outer) on both sides.

Here is what i did:

- removed the o-rings
- took the camber way, way out to loosen up the play.

Here are some videos:

Before I loosened up the camber:

Orings removed and camber slightly backed out:

Here is a picture of the new 'camber' i put into it:

So the only thing I can think of is that the dog bones are just a hair too long?

You'll find when you have it off the ground with the suspension at full droop it will bind. Hold the a-arms up where they would normally be if it was on the ground and try it. Take it for a few runs and things will start to seat better, mine did and it's much better now.

GJ sent you a pm,

I also tried to steer it on the ground and it was locked solid but now everything is great.

Question: Is the diff supposed to do this? (pretty cool if yes)

hmm.

Yes, it seems like shafts are too long.

In last pic from rocco, tire is like: /
And that did get away this problem.

But what if likes to put camber like: \
How to solve this?!

Yes the shafts are a tiny bit too long. may 2-3mm but i'm not sure i'm not an expert. Going to upgrade to front CVD mooman put some in his and he said it freed up his steering nicely.

I bought Smaretch CVD shafts
They have resolved the matter a little, but CVD should be shortened, so rectifying the matter more..

it's not the bones being too long...the arms are too short...how do i know this...cos i got 2 arms that are 2mm different in length...Chris is trying to figure out what's up as the mold hasn't changed...my original arms were fine, then after busting one i got a replacement pack...i had same problems as you guys...next pack i opened were fine... we though it was just an errant pack but seems a few more are out there

so with the slightly longer arms I have negative camber of about 2deg and the cvd's are the perfect length with the diff cups still having room to slide out a bit

Interesting about the arms, that kinda sucks.

roccos_van
03-27-2010, 12:13 AM
Moo should I call or email Scott then to get replacements? Can you tell me the proper length of the 'good' arms so I can have scott check them before he sends me a set?

mooman007uk
03-27-2010, 03:12 AM
looks like just the odd set may be out there and snuck thru...
i did run mine, with the sneaky ones, with positive camber so everything was smooth steering wise and it was good to go...
this definitely isn't the norm as none of the mt's we had to test were like it...I'm sure Scott will get a hold of you as he's aware now of what's up;)

I've just fitted MT arm on my Punibolt and have the same problem, the only way to have free steering is to run with a 5 degree \ - / camber!

So I have a bad set of front A arms then? I'm in the UK and bought the arm from Nicolas in France, how can I get them replaced?

OK, Scott from Van Hobbies is taking care of me on this; but I think this is a very, very minor problem.

This is the measurement of the correct size arms as posted by Ethan here: http://www.nutechracingforum.com/vb/showpost.php?p=9137&postcount=3

As you can see; the correct measurement from center of inside pin to center of outside pin is 140mm. Here is the pic Ethan posted:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c170/roccos_van/Nutech%20MEGA%20MT/Mtfrontlowerarm.jpg

Here are my arms measured: You can see they are 137mm.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c170/roccos_van/Nutech%20MEGA%20MT/mmtfrontarmmeasurement.jpg

I just need the proper length arms and am not worried one bit about it. Scott and the Nutech boys will take care of it.

Thanks.

Nothing weird...I just have not had a good go of it with Nutech so far...however....every issue has been addressed and is being taken care of...so on that front i am happy that the company is taking ownership of the issues and fixing them....I would just like to do more then look at my new toy...LOL!!! it will be up and running very soon

It took me an hour and a half yesterday to figure out it was camber.. wish I read this earlier~!
I still havent run my truck yet since i'm waiting for the kill switch. However does anyone else have the turning radius of a tractor? Maybe my turning radius will behave different when the vehicle is running but just rolling it down a hill it takes WIIIIDE turns even though when I lift it I can clearly see the wheels/servo turning all the way to the max.

fatjay
03-31-2010, 01:30 PM
i use a different radio then the stock and I can set how far the servo turns but even with that the radius is not that great...but look at how wide the tires are, if you put skinny tires on it would get better but then it would not be a MMT..there are some trade offs but I think once in the dirt or off road it will be great!!!

without the cvd's my truck still turned pretty sharp but i'm running a digi4 for steering, i think gas jockey is running a 5745 and gets good lock. with the cvd's it turns on a dime..they are a nice addition for sure

fatjay
03-31-2010, 08:06 PM
I also run the digi...as far as sharp turns...I think that it a relitive term...compaired to my B it does turn like a tractor..but thats apples oranges..turns way better with the Rihno...but this is an opinion with very limited run time and experience...should be up and running in the next day or 2 though...YEAH!!!

The stock servo cant turn the wheels when the vehicle is on the ground and even when moving its bad. I had HUGE almost 40ft diameter circles low speed with the truck stock servo. Going to replace it asap.
My throttle servo also fried afrter the first 8min. :( did not even get to break it in :(

Don't know if this has been posted yet but I was just looking at the Hitec site and came across the 5755, it said the Muliplex Digi 4 is discontinued the 5755 is it's replacement:omg::no: it's cheaper than the Digi 4 but I can't see it being as good.

Whaaaat, ...how can they discontinue the best servo there is? seems like a bad move to me.
now the 2 electronic parts I swear by, nomadio react and digi4 are defunct:surprise:
