View Full Version : My New Mega Beetle :-)

Well I ran a tank through it this afternoon before it started to rain :damn:, transmitter seem very nice, simple yet effective, has most everything a guy really needs for adjustment.
Even with the stock exhaust it was pretty fun and had a decent amount of power, took it down to the beach to run on the open grass for break in but couldn't resist the beach there was some nice washed out banks to jump, only hit it a few times as it was running low on fuel but my last one was WFO and it landed on the front right wheel, kart rolled a few times and landed into some trees, ran over flipped it back on its wheels and took off with no problems  didn't even crack the beetle body :band:.
tomorrow I plan to get some video if it doesnt rain :punk:

Yes I know it needs the wing to finish it off but I sold out of them right away lol and I don't have the heart to take one off a new TB II so I will wait until my next order for it.
With the beetle body on all I had to do was turn the pull start and I can get at everything with the body on :band:

i like that body, the MT is a tough bugger for sure...they just keep coming back for more
mine has had a somewhat hard life up til now and soaks most of it up... driver stupidity is the only thing that has really put it on the bench needing attention:with stupid:

Man, that thing looks sharp!!! Did it come with the shock protectors from the factory? That would be sweet. I agree it needs a wing. Can we get some video?

Good lookin Beetle. Did that shell come painted?
Nutech Racing U.S.A
03-28-2010, 02:41 AM
Thanks guys, the shock covers are something extra they didn't come that way and I figured it would be hard to find anything else to fit around those monsters lol, the Nutech shock covers are ok but those draw strings are kind of a pain maybe one on the bottom but I like the elastic outer wears style better with the velcro all the way down and elastic top & bottom.
Yes the Nutech buggy shell comes pre painted I also have the white ones for the TB II which looks exactly the same as the mega beetle black body so I am sure they will both fit. I had to cut the stock front body mounts to get the front end down a good 1" slid the top plate all the way down till it hit the top of the shock tower, drilled 2 new holes and put the screws back in, then just cut the extra off so it doesn't hit the body. The bodies came un cut so you have to cut it all out which took some time but allows for a little customization. I do have some plans for aluminum wheel wells in the front to keep a bulk of the garbage out :-).
That beetle body seems like it should hold up good as I already had a good test lol :-)

Scott

Hi Lee
Nice video looks like your body holds up good in crashes too :punk: so far I am very impressed with the beating mine has taken engine was acting a little funny today for some reason but it seemed to get better twords the end I leaned it out a little now I have a few tanks through it.
Ended up getting stuck helping out some friends today so I took my beetle and ran in there back yard, took some pretty good flips and rolls lol no damage  audio didnt work for some reason so I just put some music to it I will have to use my other camera next time good thing I ordered 5 of them lol :punk:

Now that's what im talking about , that beetle body dose look the biz that's for sure.
I noticed that some of your landings where good , some were taking a nose dive ,were you easing of the gas before you hit the inclement ?..

There was a sweet spot going uphill to the jump that the rear tires woud hit after the front wheels were off the ground so it kicks up the rear end, I never let off the throttle on them just hit the jump at a bad place a few times lol it was kind of a weird jump. I was trying to look a head to much as there was objects sticking out of the ground all over pipes, trees, pond, ect the kind of things you dont want to hit.

So its not just my driving then im still have the same effects with jumps like you have diving some times.
Its time to play around with the shocks again different springs and oils.
hopefully we should have some stock in this week.

After further review of the video I noticed some of my down hills to the face fo the hill I was jumping with enough speed it was landing at the bottom of the first hill right into the face of the hill I was jumping so when it landed in the middle you can see the suspension pre loaded and the front wheels hitting the bump in the middle causing the suspension to unload and kicking the rear end of, it certainly wasn't a even jump but it worked lol. I also had the engine bogging out on the down hills and the up hills sometimes which sucks the audio didn't work I wanted to play it back so I could here it some of those flips may have been caused by that as well, I will have to see this week if I have the same issue I will check the clunk in the tank and pull the prime bubble off to see if there is any junk sitting on the fuel diaphragm. So most of it was dumb luck and the other half was probably me haha now that I have something I can jump and not worry to much about the body cracking I will be more eager for some larger then scale jumps, I have been looking for a good road jump now with nice grass ditches on both sides I can hit WFO :punk:, now that I have found a track within 2 hour driving distance I will wait to dial in my suspension till I get some track time with it.
Man that thing took a good thrashing.... Yard? that's not a yard, that's a national park right?
Awesome
Haha yeah he has a nice big back yard they just moved about 20 miles out of town so they have quite a bit of land, its hard to tell from the video but that dip that I am jumping is about 6" deep with steep inclines its for an underground garage if I had a 4'x8' sheet of wood I was going to build a quick jump so I could have jumped over the gap with that nice gradual grass down side but didn't have any wood lol so it will have to wait, I want to jump over his pond too this summer I think that would make some good video and pictures lol.

Yes I am very impressed that first flip and cartwheel if that would have been my FS you would have seen chunks of the body flying along with a lot of plastic I can pretty much guarantee a stock FS would not have been driving away from the first flip and it didnt even faze this Nutech lol :band::yahoo: gives me the push I needed to start looking for nice big natural jumps again lol.

Haha well controlled flips LOL that's gets me every time I see it the first time it flips in the video after all that tumbling and flipping it slowly flips right back on the wheels like it was say haha do it again that was nothing!!!! I was just watching it flip seeing dollar signs in my head hahaha but not even a measly leaky shock after all that :yahoo:.
I have tried that with an FS, demolished the body, bent all the turn buckles, bent most of the axles, pulled out most of the rose joints, tweaked the chassis a bit and blew all the shocks, ow yeah and some how managed to bend a few of the wheels lol needless to say if that was my stock FS it would have been well done after the first flip :damn: but my Nutech is saying go bigger, I am very impressed for right out of the box and I'm only on my 2nd tank :punk:

beats FG hands down too and dare i say MCD, mine has been thru the ringer and back, i've not been kind to it, and despite some extreme impacts has broken very little, no doubt my cage has helped with the 2 really bad ones(it's why i built it cos i know how poor my driving can be:surprise: my insurance policy)
couple of front arms and a couple of tweaks that were easily straightened with a hammer. without a doubt the toughest truck i've owned or seen first hand..it's like a big nitro

Yeah I know most places I can some places I cant lol, depth perception is hard to judge and I don't want to hit any stationary objects :surprise: so sometimes I let off if I am pretty sure things aren't going to work out right lol. I have just over 1 hour of video from the weekend most of the time I made the jumps I just like showing the crashes right now lol I plan to put together a crash compilation once I finally break something

Haha yes that was a little French slang LOL the farmer just tilled his field so the ruts were super deep as was the dirt, I normally get a nice wide open run from the field side and hit that sand hill but I couldn't with the fresh tilled field

The inevitable finally happened I knew it couldn't keep taking the abuse I was giving it forever stock out of the box :-), I was going to have a go at it this afternoon and rolled it out of the shop from last weekends eve of destruction and noticed when I rolled it that every few inches it would tighten up and not roll smooth. So I started looking everything over and couldn't find anything that looks out of place or bent so I continued in deeper, from what I have found it looks like I managed to bend the center differential gear a bit and when I took the center differential apart I noticed that one of the satellite gears had much more play in it then the other one see pictures below, the center of the gear hogged out so it has play on the shaft. I just sold my last set of replacement center differential gears and the satellite gears :-(, I also ordered a replacement center differential assembly but doesn't look like I ever received it with my large order of parts as I can not able to locate it in my inventory.

maybe there is some modd you can do to that gear at least for a while to keep it going....
maybe drill out center of gear a little and fit a small metal spacer there? even a micro bearing may do...
as long as you can get it sitting nice and straight on shaft it would be fine.

Hi Scott
common thing with plastic diff houses to much play after a while & not enough shims, this happened to my fg, i replaced the diff internals also adding more shims problem was solved.
I have the mmt pro racer with the alloy diff houses ,I prefer the alloy over plastic any time :punk:

I found this out with my Kalee model as well :-(, ground down the 2 outer satellite gears in the rear differential from the plastic casing flexing to much allowing the gears to pull apart from each other and slip.
I managed to find another set of satellite gears in my stock of Nutech parts :-) upgraded to the alloy center differential case and ordered some 30,000 and 50,000 weight diff oil should have it here tomorrow so I can put it back together :-)!!!!

I doubled up the shims for the 2 side satellite gears to eliminate the slop of them moving in and out, the axle satellite gears still move in and out about 3mm is that normal for give?

you should have 2 large diameter shims under each outdrive gear as well..when mine is assembled there is no play..however the cups move in and out a bit but the gear stays tight...i also ditched the plastic washer on top of the oring and threw in another oring to help it seal better

I only installed 1 of the large shims under each of the drive gears I will throw the other 1 in each side so those have 2 shims as well. I also ditched that plastic washer and used the 2 orings from the plastic case instead now that I will be running diff oil instead of grease, I think I will start with the 30,000 in the center diff and see how it goes, I read some post that guys with the FG were getting a lot of engine torque from to heavy of oil in the center differential as it kept the center diff locked to long.

I was running 120K in the centre but found it was no where thick enough. it would send all my power to the front and boil the front tires while the back stalled out and did bugger all...threw in 500K and now, at last, i can get the power down from my motor ...hard rear springs also helped with hook up...running 50K fr and rear.
